Sunscreen, UVA & UVB Rays and You

With the warmer weather approaching, I thought it was only fitting to discuss something of grave importance with you.

When it comes to sunshine and cool drinks on the patio we don’t realize the dangers we put ourselves through with every second we are exposed. Whether there is bright blue skies, cloudy and overcast or a rainy day, you are exposed to the ultraviolet rays. It is something that is constantly overlooked and with global warming and the ozone layer depleting, those rays are stronger than the years before and will only get worse in the years to come.

UVA rays are constantly present. They are so powerful that they also penetrate some clothing and even glass. UVA rays are the rays responsible for the signs of aging because they are able to penetrate much deeper into the surface of the skin, damaging the cells beneath.

UVB Rays are the rays you can blame when you get a sunburn. Unlike UVA rays, these rays aren’t always the same strength year round – They’re more prevalent in the summer months, however they are able to reflect off of water or snow, so it’s always important to protect yourself year-round.

UVB rays are responsible for causing most skin cancers. While large doses of UVA rays can contribute to cancer, it’s the UVB rays that are commonly to blame.

When you think of UVB rays, think sun burn and cancer. When you think of UVA rays thing of aging.

To make sure you are protected from UVA rays, purchase sunscreen with Avobenzone, Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. With those three ingredients in your sunscreen you will help block yourself from the UVA rays. There are many blockers that will help against the UVB but those blockers are not guaranteed to last so you want to make sure you have Avobenzone, Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide included.
